The Cask of Amontillado consists of revenge and murder. Montresor tells the story from his point of view. He looked forward to getting his revenge. He has had enough of Fortunato, he has hurt him a thousand times. He exaggerated when he said that, but he has insulted him plenty of times.
The story really doesn’t let us in on how he has insulted him. It is like a mystery to us, but we have been told that he doubted that Montresor was a Mason. Montresor has been plotting on killing this wine connoisseur (Fortunato). He was also a wine connoisseur. Getting him drunk was part of the plan. Montresor took advantage of his drunkenness because he knew it would make him weak. He basically buried this man alive and got much pleasure from it.
Throughout the narration you could tell that it eased Montresor to know he was torturing this man. He was really out to get him. He was really sneaky, he smiled in his face as if there was nothing wrong. He was plotting on getting his revenge without it being known. He got him to go to catacombs. In the play you could look at it from your point of view. Some might say that jealousy played a part when the actually saw it acted out. There are all types of versions of this tale but the all end up with Fortunato being isolated with a wall. You could see the tension between these two men. In the narrative video it made it seem like montresor was trying to convince him into going but in reality fortunado was the one that insisted. Fortunato laughs a lot throughout the play as if montresor was playing a joke. That is how you know that he was completely clueless about what was going on. At no given moment did he catch on until the wall was half way put
