The different moods are developed in the film and story of “The Cask of Amontillado,” both giving off a creepy atmosphere using separate techniques. A literary technique that Poe uses is foreshadowing and dramatic irony. For example, in the beginning of the story, Montresor said he “vowed revenge” whenever Fortunato “ventured upon insult,” (line 2) which foreshadows Fortunato’s demise and points out the irony that he will be taken by surprise by Montresor’s acts of vengeance. In the story, the author uses the literary technique of detailing Montresor’s thoughts and motives when it came to getting revenge on Fortunato. When Montresor thinks “At length I would be avenged,” (line 4) we see how Montresor is blinded by his pride and need to be avenged. On another note, we begin to see the theme of not letting ignorance get the better of you in the film when there is an extreme close-up of Fortunato’s face when Montresor is closing him in the small room with brick and mortar.
