The story is centred about two individuals, Montressor and Fortunato.The former alleges the latter had wronged him by insulting him and thus looks for a way to get back to him. He hutches up a perfect way to eliminate his friend and thus settle scores. He uses his friends love for wine to ensnare him. He had carefully hatched his plan and was well prepared for any eventuality. After meeting his friend at the carnival, he approaches him and proposes he has acquired something that can pass for “Amontillado,” a high spirit Spanish cherry. Fortunato is so impressed by the offer and insists they must head to Montreessors vaults to sample the brand. For example, when Fortunato starts coughing as a result of the effects of the nitre that covers the walls of the vaults, he says, “I shall not die of a cough, “Montressor is quick to reply “True.” (Poe) His response is influenced by the knowledge that Fortunato would die as a result of dehydration and starvation in the crypt. Further, Montressors description of his family court of arms as the two men descended down the vault foreshadows future events that were to happen. The shield comprises a human foot crushing a tenacious serpent. The foot represents Montessor and the serpent represents Fortunato. The act of crushing showed how Montressor would crush his accomplice in a short time. The two men’s conversation about Masons also foreshadows Fortunatos eventual demise. Fotrunatos challenges Montessors claim that he was a mason after he failed to recognise a mason sigh he performed. To clear any doubts, Montressor shows his trowel implying that he was truly a ‘’mason”. By showing his trowel, he does not mean he is a member of the mason cult but rather he is literally a stonemason. He constructs things out of stone and mortar and thus had constructed Fortunato’s
