Role Of Fortunato In The Cask Of Amontillado By Edgar Allen Poe

Edgar Allen Poe is a famed author who writes the short story “The Cask of Amontillado”. This story was published in November of 1846 and belongs to the horror genre. It is said to believe that Poe was being in a sense picked on by two critics, mocking his image and his writing. So in response, people believe that he wrote this short story based off of this experience he had with the critics. Poe was a famous writer before this piece, and it actually wasn’t well recognized until later. The two main characters in this story, Fortunato and Montresor, along with Luchresi later mentioned, are believed to play a role in Poe’s past. Luchresi and Fortunato crossed Montresor, which leaves Montresor seeking revenge. Luchresi and Fortunato are believed to symbolize the two critics that crossed Poe, while Poe plays Montresor seeking his revenge. As they near the end of the catacombs, up comes a recess, which is basically a gap that allows you to go deeper into the depths of this catacomb. To fetch this pipe of amontillado, Montresor must strap himself into a chain and must be lowered down into the recess. Instead of Montresor doing this, Fortunato suggests he shall do it. Then Montresor states, “Then I must positively leave you” (5). Although this could be taken as a joke, Montresor has given too many hints up to this point for Fortunato to not get worried, but nevertheless, drunk Fortunato starts to make his way down. Once let down, Montresor reveals a pile of building stone and mortar intended to close up the recess. Fortunato’s drunkenness starts to wear off, but by this point it’s too late. Fortunato is buried alive to join the rest of the buried bodies in the
