In the short story “The Cask of Amontillado”, by Edgar Allen Poe, written in 1846, a friend is betrayed to the highest extent. This is evil genius because he has studied Fortunato’s behavior so much that he knows what will anger him and that if he gets insulted about his wine tasting then he will have to prove to Montresor that he is the best. This is proven when Fortunato says “’Luchesi cannot tell Amontillado from Sherry.’”(Poe) Another example of Montresor’s pure evil spirit is when he brings Fortunato down to the catacombs and knows the nitre will be down there. Montresor must know that Fortunato reacts badly to nitre and begins coughing a lot. Since he knows this, he doesn’t bring anything to drink down and there is only wine. He convinces Fortunato to drink more wine to make the pain of his throat go away. He planned it like this to get Fortunato to become drunker and get him to follow even more easily. This all takes a lot of prior planning and observation of your subject. This proves that Montresor had been planning the death of Fortunato for quite a bit of time. Therefore, planning a murder is complete proof that Montresor is evil, but he showed more
