Born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1809, Edgar Allan Poe become known for his poems, short stories, and literary criticism. “The Cask of Amontillado” which was a horror short published in 1846, has become a classic among his other work. The story takes place in an unknown city in Italy during a carnival. It focuses on a man named Montresor who is exacting revenge on his acquaintance or friend, known as Fortunato. Montresor lures Fortunato into his trap by telling him he acquired a cask of Amontillado, which is a variety of sherry wine. Fortunato, being a wine enthusiast and drunk, follows him without question. Montresor leads Fortunato into the Montresor catacombs and tricks him to enter a hole in the wall. He proceeds to trap him and bury him …show more content…
Along with this Montresor knew the setting and time was right to act out his revenge plan. At a carnival, it was common for people to be tasting wine and be a little drunk. Also, everybody is having fun and doing activities so it would be hard to notice if one person went missing. Montresor approaches Fortunato and uses his weakness to lure him down into catacombs where there is supposedly a cask of Amontillado. Montresor bears another fruit of his analytical mind when he mentions that he could ask a man named Luchresi to taste the wine instead. Fortunato is vehemently against letting Luchresi sample the Amontillado first, revealing that Luchresi is a competitor to Fortunato. Montresor knew this and mentioned his name to make sure that he would follow him down into the catacombs. His plan, to bring Fortunato into catacombs during a carnival, and bury him alive in a wall, was calculated so that there would be no error and no chance of being caught. Montresor actually tells the reader this in the beginning of the story when he says, “At length I would be avenged; this was a point definitively settled – but the very definitiveness with which it was resolved precluded the idea of risk” (179). Intelligence is not the only trait that allowed Montresor to succeed in his plan, as he possessed another symptom of sociopathy, the ability to mask his intentions and seem sane …show more content…
Fortunato, still slightly drunk, enters without realizing what is happening, as Montresor quickly chains him inside and starts rebuilding the stone wall. Fortunato starts to sober up and realizes what is happening but nervously laughs and takes it as one big joke or prank. He then starts telling Montresor that they should get going, “‘…Let us be gone. ‘Yes,’ I [Montresor] said, let us be gone’” (183). Montresor knows that Fortunato has realized his doom and as he is finishing up the wall he calls to him. He wants to hear Fortunato suffering or crying out to Montresor for forgiveness but Fortunato does not reply to Montresor’s taunting calls. He finishes up the wall and leaves the catacombs, stating that he is feeling sick. The fact that Montresor was left with the silence of Fortunato was what made him feel sick because his revenge wasn’t fully fulfilled and not because he just buried someone alive. This not only shows how vengeful he was but how little remorse and guilt he felt.
Montresor’s want of revenge was so intense due to sociopathy, irrational thinking, and craving for punishment. He was able to succeed because of his clever plan and analytical thinking which helped him find a few of Fortunato’s weaknesses. Also, due to his ability to mask his mental disorder, Fortunato trusted him and did not doubt his friendship or pick

This piece, told through the eyes of someone set on murdering another man who considers the distraught individual a friend of his, really provokes tension, suspense and mystery. These engendered feelings are created by Poe’s use of literary elements such as imagery, foreshadowing and the story’s setting. Edgar Allan Poe’s short story “The Cask of Amontillado” illustrates the wrong-doing of the character Montresor upon his friend, Fortunato, after what seems like a difference in opinions. Readers may wonder what drove Montresor to act as harshly as he did, but the reason may lie in the psychological dysfunctions imposed on his character. Montresor’s narcissistic, antisocial, and psychopathic ways led him to commit an act of murder upon Fortunato. A Narcissistic Personality Disorder is reflected through the character of Montresor.…

As Montresor has stated, Fortunato had hurt him in a more powerful way than a supposed friend should. Therefore, Montresor arranged a date and procedure. He says that he found a way to empty his house of any witnesses by tricking them into believing that he would be gone for that day. This would allow him to go through with his actions with himself as the only person holding this knowledge of the murder.…

Throughout the story, it is no clear what Montresor’s motive for killing Fortunato. He fails to make himself felt as a victim. He simply wants Fortunato to suffer and die a terrible death. However, the murder itself is not the only evidence of Montresor's psychopathic tendencies. He took enough time to establish his perfect plan and maintained a respectable reputation while doing so, as psychopaths tend to do; Montresor did not hint at Fortunato's immolation "by word nor deed (p. 212). " Montresor knew enough about Fortunato from their 'frienship' (Montresor probably never actually formed a serious friendship with Fortunato because of his mental state) that he could use Fortunato's characteristics to his advantage. For example, he knew that Fortunato "had a weak point... he prided himself on connoisseurship in wine (p. 212).…

Montresor, which is the protagonist, appears psychotic. Looking further into his character shows him controlling and unsure of himself. But these characteristics do not describe the backbone of Montresor; his boldest attribute is his self-admiration. Instead of having a assassin take care of Fortunato, Montresor had to kill Fortunato to please himself. Throughout the short story Montresor ponders in how well his plan is going.…

Montresor does not consider himself a despicable man as he notes “You, who so well know the nature of my soul” (Poe, para. 1). However, because his patience has already run thin he can’t bear the abuse anymore. The following lines illustrate this idea, “The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as best could, but when he ventured upon insult, I vowed revenge” (Poe, para. 1). It seems to me that Montresor is a good man who has been enduring the abuse of Fortunato for an extensive time. After reaching his limit, Montresor believes that he is entitled to carry out revenge without facing punishment since he has the worthy purpose of restoring fairness.…

With pride being Fortunato’s weakness, Montresor uses this and begins to plan his revenge by creating an imaginary cask of Amontillado. He does this because he knows Fortunato will do almost anything just to get a taste of it. Montresor lies to him and says that he is getting Luchesi to taste the wine because he knows this will tick Fortunato off since if anyone should be tasting anything then it should be Fortunato. Fortunato’s pride leads him to believe that not a single person is a better wine taster other than him.…

Essay 1: “The Cask of Amontillado” “The Cask of Amontillado” written by Edgar Allan Poe, entails a plot of a very dark devastating revenge story. The reader gets a first person perspective from an unreliable narrator Montresor, who from the start of the short story is already plotting against Fortunato, because he feels he has been made a fool of by him. Montresor doesn’t let the reader know exactly what Fortunato does except the detail of saying, “The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as best I could, but when he ventured upon insult I vowed revenge (Poe, 165).” the reader gets a sense that Montresor is untrustworthy and has evil intent for Fortunato, but also could be fabricating the truth of events throughout the story due to…
