The Cask Of Amontillado Analysis

I could see several different themes in this story. The one that I will concentrate on is Revenge since that seems to be a recurring theme in a lot of Edger Allan Poe's writings. Montresor plots, plans, and executes the murder of Fortunato over injustices that were done to him many years earlier. The reader doesn't know if these injustices were real or imagined but they drove Montresor insane so that he felt that he had to get revenge. He felt that his family code had been dishonored. His family prided itself on leaving no insult unavenged. Montresor's madness grew over the years until when he saw Fortunato at the carnival, he had to act on the revenge that he had been obsessed with for so many years.

The four different symbolisms that I found in the story were, first of all, Fortunato's name. His name means fortunate which is ironic since he ended up being in a very unfortunate situation. He felt that good fortune had come to him through his old friend Montresor by the offer of the fine wine. Instead, he was lured to a most unfortunate ending. Montresor's name means Treasure. He blamed everything that happened to him on Fortunato,so in order for him to achieve the treasure of freedom, he must kill Fortunato. …show more content…
The Jester always fools everyone. In this case he is the one that has been fooled. The costume hat was meant to entertain people with the jingly bells on it. The bells are the last thing that Montresor hears when he puts in the last brick. He was the last person to ever be entertained by those
