“The Cask of Amontillado” begins with an insight into the narrator’s mind set. He is obviously very upset with Fortunato, for an offense or an insult that no one else is privy to; including the alleged offender himself. An insult so unforgiveable, the narrator solemnly vows revenge on his secret adversary and states: “for when he ventured upon insult, I vowed revenge” (paragraph 1). An atrocious insult which probably occurred only in the narrator’s demented mind; as the offense in question was never revealed in the entire story. This, is an oddity, as an offense of this contemptible caliber drove the narrator to concoct and execute a rather elaborate murder, why then would it be hidden from everyone else, including the alleged offender? It is obvious that Fortunato resided in the land of oblivion with regards to this insult and Montressor’s true feelings towards him. For that reason, Montressor is an evil coward. He pretends all is well; he even calls him friend, “it was about dusk, one evening during the supreme carnival …show more content…
He puts “on a mask of black silk, and drawing a roquelaire” (paragraph 22). He is also in possession of a sword (not uncommon in those days) but a trowel? This should have been alarming to Fortunato; however, the mastermind of madness ensured that the Jester was way beyond inebriation. Montressor seems unnervingly comfortable in the cold, cobweb infested, dark, damp and skull-laden tombs. His attire, in conjunction with this graveyard environment is reflective of his dark and heinous heart. He strokes his own ego from time to time with his pseudo- concerns about the nitrates and Fortunato’s health; knowing very well that Fortunato will not leave without seeing the
