The “Trifles” play, published by Susan Glaspell, started off the play with the prime suspect that killed Mr. Wright being Mrs. Wright, his wife. On the other hand, in “The Cask of Amontillado”, published by Edgar Allan Poe, the narrator started off with Montresor plotting to on taking his revenge on Fortunato. As much as there are similarities in both the play and story, there are also differences that distinct both the narrators. For instance, in “The Cask of Amontillado”, the reader will immediately know that Fortunato’s killer was Montresor. During the end of the story, when Fortunato was being buried alive, he said, “It was now midnight, and my task was drawing to a close….…

This intended mystery will never let his readers know as to what extent the attack on his feelings are. If the insult was significant, Montresor’s boastful nature would have let the facts be known, and Fortunato would be hesitant to greet him at the carnival. However that was not the case, as it states, “He accosted me with excessive warmth.” (866) this statement makes it clear that Fortunato was oblivious to the insult. The fact that Montresor avoids confronting the issue, the…

1). Fortunato pushes the limits and with an insult he overfills the glass of Montresor’s understanding, which leads to Montresor declaring revenge towards his friend. Montresor believes that he must “punish with impunity” (Poe, para 1), in other words, that he is to be free of any fault towards him, as his motives have high validity. As the story progresses Montresor describes how he successfully crafts his task of ending Fortunato’s life. Montresor notes that “He [Fortunato] had a weak point… he prided himself on his connoisseurship in wine” (Poe, para. 3).…

Essay 1: “The Cask of Amontillado” “The Cask of Amontillado” written by Edgar Allan Poe, entails a plot of a very dark devastating revenge story. The reader gets a first person perspective from an unreliable narrator Montresor, who from the start of the short story is already plotting against Fortunato, because he feels he has been made a fool of by him. Montresor doesn’t let the reader know exactly what Fortunato does except the detail of saying, “The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as best I could, but when he ventured upon insult I vowed revenge (Poe, 165).” the reader gets a sense that Montresor is untrustworthy and has evil intent for Fortunato, but also could be fabricating the truth of events throughout the story due to…

Beyond the story’s dialogue, irony covers numerous portions of the story. The first thing that I found ironic in Poe’s story is its title, “The Cask of Amontillado”. When I first heard of this story, the word cask, which meant wine barrel sounded very similar to casket. After reading the story, “The Cask of Amontillado” was the perfect choice for the title because it leads to Fortunato’s final resting place. In addition, “the story's setting is ironic in that a carnival is a place for gaiety, happiness, and fun and games, not for cruel, cold blooded murder.”…

He prided himself on his connoisseurship in wine,” (866). Having met Montresor after consuming a lot of alcohol at the carnival has impaired Fortunato’s thinking in that, at the very least, he does not realize that he has already intoxicated and goes on to drink more at the offering of Montresor. He does not recognize that although he has made insults toward Montresor he is still very friendly with him and greets him graciously (866). His issue of pride goes deeper than just gluttony for alcoholic beverages. His pride is induced by the need to show Montresor that it is he, and he alone, knows a true Amontillado.…
