Dogs in particular have been proven to be extremely difficult to clone, more so than other animals. Once they had accomplished their goal and cloned a puppy which had the ability to survive for a long period of time and could result in more puppies being born, the researchers were more confident of their ability and could analyse the prospect of cloning dogs for the purpose of guide or sniffer dogs. In addition to this, they could also consider the possibility of cloning livestock and the many other beneficial ways in which cloning can be utilized. Once, however, it was accomplished, not only was it amazing that Dr Lee and Hwang were capable of such a feat, but the many benefits thereof became evident. It has opened up numerous possibilities, such as cloning specifically for the purpose of aiding others, which in this case would be guide or sniffer dogs. Scientists say that there is also a high likelihood that cloning dogs could act as an advantage to medical science, as it could be utilized in the creation of stem cells to treat serious ailments. In addition, it has created an awareness of the extent of excellence with regards to modern day science and technology – many now have the knowledge of how advanced our world actually is. Since Snuppy was the first dog to actually be cloned, this was heightened. There is another way in which this case was seen as beneficial, however it is perceived as slightly minor in regards to the other benefits. This application of cloning does not relate to dogs only, but to all animals which can be considered to be pets. Many who have mourned the loss of a pet have ‘brought it back to life’ through reproductive cloning. While this may seem a little extreme, this scientific breakthrough has made it possible for these pet owners to feel connected to their deceased pets once again.
