The Case Of Sayfullo Saipov

On October 31, 2017, a 29-year-old man, Sayfullo Saipov, ran over pedestrians and cyclists on a Manhattan bike path. He rented a pick-up truck from Home-Depot in New Jersey. Saipov later crashed into a school bus and jumped out of the truck with a pellet gun and a paintball gun and shouted in Arabic, “God is great.” Officials said that he was tied to ISIS because they found a handwritten note near the truck with a few lines of Arabic indicating allegiance to the Islamic State. 8 people were killed and a dozen were wounded. Saipov was shot and wounded and taken into custody by local authorities. After this deadly attack, the New York truck attack suspect is now pleading not guilty. On November 21, Saipov was charged in an indictment with eight counts of murder, twelve counts of attempted murder, one count of providing material support to Islamic State and one count of violence and destruction of a motor vehicle resulting in death. Saipov could get the death penalty. Saipov evidently told investigators that he was inspired by watching Islamic videos. He said that he began planning the attack a year ago and that he “felt good about what he had done.” Saipov also asked for permission to display the flag of the militant group Islamic State in his hospital room. …show more content…
