Sara Lawrence-Lightfoot brought up the question of should people hold onto memories. “Many people believe that to move up the ladder of success and achievement, they must forget the past ,repress it and relinquish it. But others have just the opposite view.” This means that people are having everyday issues determining whether or not you should hold onto memories or let them go. Memories have a positive and negative effect when it comes to dealing with other people, traumatizing events, or important things to you or others.

During his Nobel Peace Prize speech, “Memory, Hope, and Despair”, Elie Weisel said, “The opposite of the past is not the future but the absence of future; the opposite of the future is not the past but the absence of past. The loss of one is equivalent to the sacrifice of the other.” This quote really captures how I feel about the past; without it, one cannot have a future, which is the reason I find my memories more important than my dreams. In that same speech, Elie Weisel also said, “Without memory, our existence would be barren and opaque.”…

Memory can be twisted based on grief and guilt. A good example of this is in “The Scarlet Ibis”, by James Hurst. The story is written as a memory of the protagonist’s brother Doodle. The events that play out make it really easy to blame Brother for Doodle’s death, and make it harder to analyze him because we only know him in relation to the memories and events he is recalling. He points out all he things he did wrong, this makes it where the readers will most likely leave the story with a negative impression of him, and forget that he was just a child when all this happened.…

American novelist, Barbara Kingsolver once said, “Memory is a complicated thing, a relative to truth, but not its twin” (Kingsolver). Memories and truth are intertwined, one does not exist without the other. Sure, most memories bring comfortable and peace of mind when altered and modified into what one desires the truth to be. However, to keep the truth suppressed within will only prolong the inevitable. The truth cannot be suppressed for long; in time truth will surface and cause a greatly devastation as one will realize that the memory was a mere fantasy.…

“God grant me the serenity, To accept the things I cannot change, Courage to change the things I can, And the wisdom to know the difference.” In this Serenity Prayer, I believe the serenity for acceptance, courage, and wisdom is found in the present moment. The present moment is God’s gift where humans can experience true joy. Whether reminiscing or brooding, residing in the past cannot provide the feeling of wholeness. Alternatively, living in the future can only bring anxiety and fear.…

Memories Shown Through a Bullet Memories usually come and go, but the ones that are important and help in the shaping of a person are the ones that usually stay. Humans make a lot of memories, some good and some bad, but at the end of they day they are the reason why a person is a certain way. Tobias Wolff’s short story “Bullet in the Brain” shows how Andres, “a book critic known for the weary, elegant savagery with which he dispatched almost everything he reviewed,” becomes angry after listening to two women have a “loud, stupid conversation [that puts] him in a murderous temper” (Wolff, 200). While impatiently waiting in line, he notices that one of the tellers placed a ‘POSITION CLOSED’ sign in front of her window, and this made Anders…

The secondary article “Why People Hold Grudges and What to do About Them” written by Susan Krauss, is neither compelling nor convincing to the reader. The evidence to support her main notion of “believing in a just world”, (BJW) and the impacts this theory has on a person’s ability to hold a grudge over someone, is very limited. Krauss presents very little evidence and information regarding this topic which causes the reader to have doubts about the validity of the idea, and furthermore the reader is left to wonder what other theories or ideas may influence someone’s ability to hold a grudge. Everyone knows someone who “holds a grudge”, for some people this grudge can create a rift and divide that often becomes the end of a relationship. Krauss…
