This is a very good example constant disregard Nick shows towards his wife which proves to the reader that Nick is a poor husband and that Amy is a victim of an egocentrical man. This is really the opposite of how Nick should treat his beloved wife. Amy only becomes real for Nick when he needs something to bolster his self centered ego. Amy’s feelings of disparity are evident when she writes in her journal “he uses me for sex when he needs to. he presses me against a table or over the back of the bed and fucks me,silent until the last few moments,those few quick grunts,and then he releases me,he puts a palm on the back of my small back,his one gesture of intimacy,and he says something that is that is supposed to make it seem like a game: You 're so sexy sometimes I can 't control myself” (185) Nick fails to realize that all of his egotistical actions do not go unnoticed. Amy knows at this point that her relationship is failing due to Nick’s personality and she is making mental notes of all of his deficiencies and she is going to react in the harshest way possible. Amy soon becomes an emotional wreck at the hands of her unpleasant spouse. The signs of Amy’s deterioration at the hands of her husband are made evident in one of her most sickening journal entries. As readers we feel her anguish when she writes “You know how I found out? I saw them. That’s how stupid my husband is. One snowy april night, I felt so lonely. I was drinking warm amaretto with Bleeker and reading,lying on the floor as the snow came down listening to old scratchy albums...I got there just in time to see him leaving with her. I was in the goddamn parking lot, twenty feet behind him, and he didn 't even register me, I was a ghost.”(233) In this moment she has lost everything. The fact that Amy now has to rely on alcohol because she is lonely is a direct result of Nick’s poor treament.To her astonishment, when she goes to the bar she catches her husband cheating on her and he doesn 't even notice that she is 25 feet away from him.
