Data for this study was obtained by sending an information letter home with children at a grade school to inform the guardians of this particular experiment. A specific criterion was established to ensure that the children actually sustained a cranial injury by ensuring that they had a documented case of a traumatic brain injury within the last 2 to 5 years. Furthermore, experimenters excluded individuals who had documented mental disorders prior to the cranial injury. Once the criterion was met, experimenters conducted an over the phone interview with the parents of the children with a traumatic brain injury. The quality of life for this study sought to identify the level of education, level of intelligence, personality and employment of the adult survivor. An interesting phenomenon occurred during this research, the personality and intellect showed no impairments. However, these individuals did not meet the educational and employment expectations commiserate with their age. Researcher recorded the interactions between the parent and child while they played for 10 minutes. There were no guidelines established during this portion of the experiment, just simple observation was noted. Experimenters rated either positive or negative behaviors of the parents during this time period. Positivity was identified as individuals who were only slightly negative and were affectionate and warm towards their children. Negativity was identified as those parents who displayed anger through tone, sarcasm or physical punishment.
Results of the study indicated that children of positive parents demonstrated a greater amount of internalization vice externalizing behaviors. In contrast, children of parents who displayed negative emotions often externalized their emotions and had issues with negativity their selves. Unfortunately, these actions created a vicious cycle, which became increasingly problematic. As the children increasingly externalized their behaviors, the parents displayed greater levels of negativity. Therefore it is critical to ensure that guarding practice positive parenting immediately following a traumatic brain
