Our largest certified organic supplier, Glaser Farms, has been forbidden to resume business activities after state inspectors found genetically modified plants growing amongst their crops. Monsanto, a multinational agrochemical and agricultural biotechnology corporation, has filed a lawsuit against Glaser Farms for infringing on their seed patent. This has led to a lot of negative publicity not only for Glaser Farms but also for all stores carrying their products. Many of La Costa Supermarket’s customers are enraged because we have inadvertently violated our own mission. As soon as we were informed of this matter, we cleared all our shelves and stock of Glaser Farms products, fruits, and vegetables and for this reason we now have 35% less inventory at our supermarket. In result, our sales have decreased by 40% in the past week. Until further due notice, we will no longer buy from Glaser Farms. Glaser Farms claims that their organic farm was contaminated by a nearby Monsanto subsidiary through cross-pollination. Glaser Farms’ owner, Stan Glaser, assured the media that he has never bought or planted a genetically modified seed in his life. In a recent interview with the Miami New Times he said, “At Glaser Farms, we preach ecological and agricultural awareness. We would never want to associate ourselves with the resources or practices of a huge unethical corporation like Monsanto.
