The Cascades Survival Simulation
The Cascades Survival Simulation is one of the many situations created to help teams develop and understand each other better. This test challenges our decision making and interpersonal skills as a team. In this situation, our group has traveled to the Cascade mountain range. As the weather starts getting bad, we realize it is not a good idea to stay there because there is a heavy storm approaching the mountains quickly. As the weather gets worse, there is no way get out of the area. Since we were inexperienced and unfamiliar with the area, we didn’t have enough supplies with us to survive the storm in the cabin. We had to rank the items we found on the helicopter according to their level of importance in our survival.
At first, we were supposed to rank the items individually, and then as a team. After this, we compared each of the ranks to the expert ranking. The individual score was much higher than the team scores and the team ranking was closer the expert ranking. This means that we were less likely to survive alone in an extreme situation like this one. Every team member spoke up and gave a reason even though we had limited time. If someone didn’t agree to it, they stated their reason and then the team accordingly decided what to do. For example, we first started ranking from the most important item. Three of the members ranked the hatchet as the first one, the other two said lighter and I said flashlight. Instead of just going with the hatchet as it had the majority vote, we all discussed and gave our reason for choosing our items and then finally agreed on hatchet should be the first thing on the list as for fire we first need wood, and the hatchet will be very useful for
