Challenges College Students Face in Higher Education Today
Colleges must take serious steps to assist potential and current students succeed in school, because there are numerous challenges facing the new generation of clients. The new college student is no longer the typical 18 – 22 year old. The new student body varies widely in their characteristics, and they present unique challenges. Some challenges facing adult-learners today:
a. Cost to attend, textbooks and financial aid – The cost to attend college has increased drastically over the years, and government and gift aid has not kept pace with the growing cost of attendance;
b. Increase numbers of non-traditional and first-generation college bound student – Students in this group can experience social and culture adjustments to college;
c. Academic preparedness is also a challenge for some students, because students are juggling work, family, and school;
d. Lack of technology skills can contribute drastically to students meeting the academic obligations;
