The struggles she has gone though have propelled her to the things she has always wanted: to have a great career, to send her children to college and to help as many people as possible. My mom graduated high school in 1989 and almost exactly one year later she was pregnant with my sister, Allison. My mom was planning on going to get her LPN from a local community college, but how was this even possible with a child to support. She did it though. She worked 2 jobs and raised a young girl. She also went to night classes so she could become a nurse. My mom continued her education as she got older while still working as a nurse. In 2010, she received her master’s degree in nursing, specializing in psychiatric mental health, from University of Virginia. Her degree has helped her continue her goal of of helping sick patients. My mom currently works at the Medical College of Virginia, a branch of Virginia Commonwealth University. She chose this job because she had done her clinical rotations at VCU and loved the ability to be on the cutting edge of treatment to mentally ill patients. From having a child from a young age to working 2 jobs and having to go to school at the same time my mom has still found a way to help others. That was always her life goal and she has done a great job accomplishing it. She said she has never had a job she didn’t like in nursing. I believe that one hundred percent because she loves helping people and making sick people’s life better. She’s accomplished many of her life goals, including helping destigmatize mental health, helping a lot of people, being able to send her children to college and being able to have a rewarding career. “They say you die twice. One time when you stop breathing and a second time, a bit later on, when somebody says your name for the last time” a man named Banksy once said.
