A diesel mechanic is a great career choice because of the many job opportunities. Mechanics get to be hands on with the engines that power many of the vehicles in today 's world. “Although being a diesel mechanic is a hard job because you get your knuckles busted every once in a while, knowing that being a successful mechanic and doing the job quick and efficient makes up for the blood and sweat” said David Anderson. “Being a diesel mechanic every day is a new challenge that needs to be resolved in a timely manner” he further stated. Diesel mechanics typically follow a checklist of procedures, test drive the vehicle to be able to diagnose the problems, report the problem to be repaired to the appropriate person, use specialized tools to …show more content…
There are technicians and mechanics. Their job descriptions are different depending on their education or experience. A beginner technician or mechanic may start of gaining skills while they do general housekeeping in the shop and get individualized hands on training from a skilled mechanic or technician. This would be titled an entry level employee. A technician will be responsible for keeping the vehicle in good repair, provide maintenance and diagnose the problems. They report their findings to the mechanic who will do the hands on work. Mechanics are considered the laborer who will do the “fixing” of the problem reported. A mechanic may also be the one to diagnose and repair with the proper education with some of the specialized equipment. David Anderson stated that “when a mechanic is doing a routine check up, they will use a checklist to make sure everything is in good condition, and they will diagnose, maintain and repair the equipment” in the company that he works …show more content…
Some special tools would include an oscilloscope, which is used to measure the voltage produced by electronic components, hydraulic lifts which raise trucks, buses, and heavy parts or equipment by using a lift or hoist, and lubricating machines. Some common tools would be a variety of different size bolts or screws used to repair parts, screwdrivers, battery chargers, wrenches, alignment equipment tools and gauges and many others. In addition to these special tools, the technician or mechanic may use hand held or laptop computers to diagnose problems and adjust engine functions. There will be special training sessions to use these types of diagnostic tools.
