Through the profession of nursing, the professional nurse fulfills multiple roles throughout his or her daily work. These roles vary in the intensity and skill needed, from being able to provide accurate medicine dosages to the patient, to simply being present with the patient, and being a comfort to them. Nurses provide more than just physical care; they provide spiritual and emotional care to their patients every day. Such applies to all registered nurses, regardless of which field they decide to enter and work in. All nurses, from the nurses within the maternity and pediatric wards to the nurses within the trauma and geriatric wards, provide this basic care and support for their patients, who are all at various stages of their lives. I plan to do so through actions such as establishing connections and advocating for my patients so that they may always be in an environment where their mental health is promoted along with their physical health. Such can be done using caring behaviors, which are described by Taber’s (as cited in Vance, 2003) as being behaviors such as “attentive listening, comforting, honesty, patience, responsibility, providing information so the patient can make an informed decision, touch, sensitivity, respect, calling the patient by name” (para. 3).
