The career I am choosing is Optometry and majoring in biology. I became interested in the study of the eyes when I was about 10 years old. My Aunt Alicia is an optometrist; she has influenced me into eyes. I am going to follow into her footsteps, but first things first is education. Education will enhance my knowledge about the eyes and how important they are to see. Did you know the second most complex organ in your body is the eye, after the brain. I do not know if this occupation is in demand or is in demand in a specific part of the country/word… I can not find it on the internet… The positives of being an optometrist are having good work hours, nice income, job opportunities and helping and working with people. The negatives of being an optometrist are education is long and costly, give out bad new to people, and it can also be hard to bed successful in a bad economy (selling glasses, contacts, etc.). Which all of those are connected to science and/or math. You must have one of those or more. I am majoring in biology, because biology mostly fits my sense in what I want to do and I can perform well in biology. Science is my favorite subject. Biology degree includes a prerequisite courses for Optometry school and provides the training that I need to be successful in Optometry school. The course work for Optometry in biology covers the knowledge of cellular processes, which will help Optometrists use and understand the changes that may occur in the eyes. Another way a biology degree provides in the course work in genetics, which helps Optometrists to understand the hereditary factors that may contribute to vision problems in their clients.
Many of the optometrists own and operate their own practices. It is important for Optometrists to have good business, accounting and managerial skills. Being able to multitask, delegate and communicate effectively is critical for having a successful career as an optometrist. Optometry takes about 9 years to finish the school courses but, in University of Incarnate Word it takes about 8 years. I always wanted to go there and plus it is closer to
