Essay On Why I Want To Study Social Work

I used to believe that most students pursued careers in social work due to negative childhood experiences that later encouraged them to help other people or that they had interactions with other social workers when they were young and served as a role model and encouragement to follow the same profession. Now I understand that my thoughts were not necessarily true because none of those reasons pertain to me. The experience that I received while working along side a school social worker at my previous employment led me towards the social work profession. I have now been exposed to working with people with mental, physical, and developmental disabilities as well as substance abuse problems. Having the experience of being in the field as a social worker has brought me much more confidence and knowledge. I trust that the knowledge I have gained while being in the field will greatly benefit me in having a successful experience in the master’s program.
Working at HHCLA has taught me an aspect in life that can be very beneficial to know as a professional. HHCLA taught me the concept of Harm Reduction and meeting individuals where they are at. We as social workers don’t necessarily need to have the fix to everyone’s problems, however we can help our clients reduce the harm that might be causing their problems. In using harm reduction we meet people where they are at with their problem and move on from there.
There is a great feeling of comfort that I receive every time I provide assistance to any person in need and that same feeling is something that attracted me to the profession of social work, but unfortunately there has been a fearsome situation that has made me feel powerless and unable to assist a
