The Miller’s Tale

In the Canterbury Tales, many characters traveled on a long pilgrimage to the shrine of Saint Thomas Becket. On their journey, they kept each other entertained by a witty competition of who could tell the best story. There were many tales that were told on their rigorous travels, but the best one was the Miller’s tale. The Miller was drunk and belligerent when he came up with his story, and he promises that it is a noble tale that will repay the Knight’s tale. The Miller threatens to leave after the Host tries to let another person tell their story before him, however the Host agrees to let him continue. He studies astrology and is also well educated in the art of love. Nicholas partnered with an old carpenter named John, who was extremely jealous and possessive over his eighteen-year-old wife Alisoun. When the Carpenter leaves one day, Nicholas begins to make intimate moves towards Alisoun. She immediately begins to cry for help but Nicolas persuades her with a few sweet words. After a while, she agrees to sleep with him when is safe to do so. She is worried that John will find out, but Nicholas is certain he can outwit the carpenter. He creates a plan that will let him and Alisoun have an entire night together if all goes correctly. He has Alisoun tell John that Nicholas is extremely sick, so John sends a servant to see for him and the servant finds Nicholas on bed rest. He reports back to the carpenter, and John goes to check and on him for himself. Nicholas tells John he has a vision from God and has seen a terrible event that will become worse than Noah’s flood and will destroy all life. John believes Nicholas and begins to fear for him and his wife’s safety. He begins to create a plan where they will all sleep in tubs on Monday night so when the flood comes they can just float until the water …show more content…
All three of them get established in their hanging tubes. When John falls asleep and begins to snore, Nicholas and Alisoun return back to the house to sleep together. Early in the morning Absolon, a clerk who is deeply in love with Alisoun, decides to stop by her home to possibly get a kiss or more from her. He opens her window and calls for her and begs for one kiss, while she explains to him that she already loves another person. He kept being consistent and wouldn’t stop asking her, so Alisoun gets rather irritated and agrees to let him have one quick kiss in the dark. Absolon leaps into the room excitedly to receive a kiss from his one true love. However, when he leans in for the kiss he doesn’t discover her lips in front of him to kiss, it is her naked butt instead. Her and Nicholas begin to overjoy in laughter while Absolon is disgusted, and wants to clean his mouth off immediately. He now is severely angered, and seeks revenge for Alisoun’s ruthless prank. He then begins to head back to the town, and receives a red-hot iron poker from a blacksmith. Absolon returns with it to the window, and he begs for another kiss and promises Alisoun a golden ring. Nicholas decides he wants to stick his butt outside the window this time because he is getting aggravated with Absolon’s consistent begging. When he puts his butt in Absolon’s face, he farted loudly and then out of anger
