“Canadian cannabis: Marijuana as an irritant/problem in Canada-US relations”
Relations between Canada and the United States have linked closely for several centuries; these two countries have influenced each other on the economy, culture, society and so many parts. However, many Americans think that marijuana irritant may affect the Canada-US relations. The situation is a large amount of marijuana is being exported from Canada to US illegally, but most states of the US do not allow using and producing marijuana. Comparing and contrasting strategies are the appeal to logic to prove the author 's statement. By comparing several situations, it would be affected on the Canada and the US relations by referring to Mulgrew analysis, “Marijuana cultivators in Canada view judicial punishments not as a deterrent buy rather as an operating cost”(P235). In this comparison, the author claims that Canada is considered as being soft on marijuana issue comparing with the United States. Furthermore, Gecelocsky uses comparing and contrasting techniques to show the differences in the Canadian and America approaches to the influence of marijuana irritant in the relationship. For example, the author compares the two situations may lead to marijuana irritant to become the marijuana problem, "The first would be if the marijuana irritant were to become more directly linked with homeland security problem; second, the Bush administration, or the US congress, began to link more closely the export to the US of marijuana from Canada with cocaine and other drugs from Mexico"(P236). By comparing these two scenarios, the author claims that if either or the two situations were to happen, this would have a significant effect on Canada; the marijuana problem between Canada and US border is important and the Canadian government should pay more attention about it. Otherwise, the relationship between Canada and US will be changed by the marijuana situation in a negative way.
