The novel The Call of the Wild takes place in the Yukon territory, which is between Alaska and Canada. The Klondike gold diggers kidnapped dogs and used them as sled dogs to travel around Yukon territory. The setting affects the story because it is in winter, the dogs get cold easily, and they often don’t give them food. When the dogs do receive food, it isn’t at all filling and sometimes the dogs would kill one another for it. The dogs were also beat with canes and whips, which made their trips more difficult, because the dogs would become injured. If the dogs did become injured, the weaker ones would be left behind to die. If the more powerful dogs got injured, they would receive medical attention.

I didn’t like the book at first, it looked like a bunch to read. It also looked confusing. I liked the book because it has a good meaning, even though Buck is just a dog people can learn things from him. My favorite quote from the book was, “His eyes turned blood-shot, and he was metamorphosed into a raging fiend. So changed was he that the Judge himself would not have recognized him.” I think that quote is a memorable quote and it means something to me. I think something that should change to the novel is having either a longer book or a second book. I really enjoyed this
