Summary: The Passover Journey

When we think of the greats in literature, we think of Ernest Hemingway, Charles Dickens, Virginia Woolf, and Jack London. Though these are not the only names that can convey meaning in the written word. Children’s books are essential in this way, on the surface, they may not look to be anything other than simplistic entertainment, though they are truly rich with deeper meaning. These brightly decorated pieces of literature are vital to children learning about how the world works. They can teach anything from racial inequality to the lives of illegal immigrants. Books help children to develop their moral compass through analogies, if their favorite character thinks racism is wrong (though the word racism may not be outrightly stated) then the child will advocate that it is wrong as well. Authors who compose literature for youth must have particular attributes to convey their thoughts on a serious issue in a straightforward yet concealed fashion. The Israelites are conveyed as they are in this book, because it is unbiased and factual to the historical records that we have. Centers and margins are obvious because of the straightforward style of the text. Using this book we can learn about how the Jewish culture has been prosecuted since day one, and that we as a culture and community, need to help to end blind hatred against any group of people. Bias against the Jewish faith and race were obviously the main theme of the beginning of this book, though by the end one has learned about how a history of events may be shared and reinforced through celebrations. There are Rabbis who say “in every generation, we should think of ourselves as if we were the ones who left Egypt.”
