“The Butterfly Circus,” by Joshua Weigel is a short film about a limbless man with a circus crew fighting against what society thinks of him. Within Catholic Social Teaching, there is a set of moral principles that provide a foundation for making social policy decisions. The eight principles are Human Dignity, Community, Common Good, Participation, Subsidiarity, Preferential Option for the Poor, Stewardship, and Solidarity. There are many examples of Catholic Social Teaching being applied in this film. In the first part of the film “The Butterfly Circus”, we can see Human Dignity being disrespected, then restored. While travelling, the Butterfly Circus decide to stop by a carnival. In a sideshow, a limbless man named Will gets treated and disrespected very badly from the audience. Kids were throwing tomatoes at him but he couldn’t do anything back. Mr. Mendez, the leader of the Butterfly Circus steps in and stops the kids from throwing another tomato, and with respect, he whispers the words “you are magnificent” to Will. We can see Human Dignity here because while people treated Will with disrespect and maybe even hate, Mr. Mendez didn’t …show more content…
Community teaches that we develop socially to fulfill ourselves only in relationship ship others. The crew of the Butterfly Circus are very welcoming to Will, and they care about him as much as they care about their whole crew (more like a family). Common Good is shown when Mr. Mendez purposefully decides not to help Will cross the small river. He wanted Will to work to live, and fulfill himself in the community (the crew) with one another, and look to fulfill not only himself, but to work to build a society that benefits all people. The outcome, of this is shown when Will performs his performance, and him succeeding in it gives the crew happiness, and hope to a disabled boy who watched Will’s

Imagery is a technique frequently used by authors in order to promote the theme(s) that they are attempting to convey to the reader through their work. It is the use of figurative language to represent objects, and communicate ideas to the reader so that they may mentally visualize them, and understand themes in the work of literature. Generally speaking in literature, the reader may only recognize or relate to a few of the themes that the author is portraying through contrasting imagery, but to the author, all of the themes may be of importance. In The Time of the Butterflies, Julia Alvarez conveys many themes through the use of imagery, including sacrifice, feminism and religion. Alvarez uses contrasting imagery to develop the story’s theme…

Rhetorical Analysis of In the Time of the Butterflies Julia Alvarez, in her novel, In the Time of the Butterflies, emphasizes the humanity of the Mirabal sisters, that many portrayals of leave out, in favor of highlighting their heroism. In order to make the Mirabals more relatable and to show that there’s a hero hidden in all of us, she (Alvarez) shows us their weaknesses, their fears, and most importantly, their faults. Alvarez’s purpose in my selected passage (pages 108-112), is to show that even in a scene where from the outside, Minerva’s behavior would often be perceived as courageous (and probably a bit stupid), Minerva Mirabal is in fact, filled with a sense of dread, and doom. Alvarez opens Minerva's scene at the National Police Headquarters…

There are many injustices throughout the world today, and one apparent example is the dehumanization of lower class people. Many people are exploited in order for others to make a profit. This is largely in developing countries, but it also exists in industrialized countries. The main cause of this injustice is large companies trying to make money. This injustice occurs in multiple forms, including ill treatment of naive people and discrimination of others for past mistakes.…

“A group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common.” That is the definition of the word community. The Outsiders, a novel by S.E. Hinton, was based on a setting of a divided community consisting of the Socs, the rich Westside kids, and the Greasers, the poorer Eastside kids, usually deemed for trouble. The problem: they can’t put their differences aside, and realize they are both human. They just can’t crack the code on equality.…

Neglect and abuse are societal norms in all corners of life. Most of the problems that arise from these are dealt with easily and permanently. Sadly many people cannot deal with, or even protect themselves from, these issues, specifically the elderly in care facilities. Neglect and abuse towards the elderly in retirement, nursing, and care facilities are not only social or political issues, but rather moral issues because they violate multiple Basic Building Blocks of Catholic Social Teachings. Of the building blocks, the most prominently violated are the Principle of Human Dignity, the Principle of Preferential Protection of the Poor and Vulnerable, and the Principle of Human Equality.…
