Every morning, I used to walk to the bus stop, past my neighbor, Mrs. White’s house, where her little Shih Tzu, Jakey, would greet me, rain or shine, with endless barks. I would pretend to text on my phone, snapchat, instagram, refresh instagram, refresh it again, and refresh one more time… before moving to facebook, and then a notification would come up with a list of the WIFI networks to connect to, and the first one on the list, “Jakey,” would sit there craving my attention. One of the most popular movements that began in 2012 was “Black Lives Matter”. According to the movement 's creator, “Black Lives Matter” is in international movement that campaigns against violence and racism and “affirms the lives of Black queer and trans folks, disabled folks, black-undocumented folks, folks with records, women and all Black lives along the gender spectrum. It is a tactic to (re)build the Black liberation movement” (Cullors). In response, the “all lives matter” movement took effect and the loss of empathy became discernable in the people, predominantly white, protesting for the idea that all lives matter, regardless of race. These people are living in mainly white areas, in predominantly white social groups, who have always had privilege in society. According to a study in October of 2014 by the Brookings Institution researchers for the Boston Federal Reserve, “16 percent of white children born into the poorest one-fifth of U.S. families will rise to become a member of the top one-fifth by the time they turn 40 years old. [...] Only 3 percent of black children born into the poorest one-fifth of families will ever make the leap to the top income group” (Short). A great deal of this poverty is highly concentrated in areas where the callous injustices that transpire are completely unforeseen to white people in support of the “All Lives Matter” movement. It is important that members of a workforce understand the thoughts and sentiments of others to better perform at their jobs. Research conducted at Massachusetts General Hospital has shown “that physician empathy plays an important role in forging strong patient-physician relationships and boosting patient satisfaction as well as patients having better treatment adherence and suffering from fewer major medical errors” (Swank). Now this doesn’t only pertain to medical staff, it falls with most jobs. Teachers, therapists, social workers, bank tellers, and cashiers become so effective when they understand the individual they are dealing with. Empathy is vital in all aspects of life to build strong relationships with others and to make people happier. Ultimately, happiness is such an important tool in the stressful age we live
