What is the worst punishment on earth? Isolation; the worst criminals in this world are subjected to be deserted on an island or being left for dead high in the mountains. In the Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka, what did the protagonist do to be exposed to such torture? Nothing; Gregor went to work every day only to provide for his family. Awakening one morning Gregor has become a monstrous vermin unable to speak to humans. Gregor wants to be connected with his family, but in his heart he knows he is forever expelled to isolation. This conflict serves to illuminate that humans want to be a part of a family no matter who it is.

He endeavors anyway. This really exemplifies Gregor 's motivation to remain alive, but while still alive knowing he is in a hopeless battle against something no person can fight. Gregor can’t connect on deeper level with anybody. A lack of time is his major roadblock in developing friendship before his metamorphosis. Then after his transformation He has plenty of time, but he is unable to speak. This creates a very sad and lonely feeling. Gregor is even isolated from his mother. His mother is unable to look at him without fainting. Kafka even goes so far as to say, “Gregor was now cut off from his mother” (36). Gregor and his mother try to still love each other, but that is an impossible goal. Gregor being cut off from his mother has a deeper meaning in the story. It really suggests Gregor being cut off from the world he once knew. The multiple times Gregor 's father beats him back into his room illustrates Gregor 's attempts to become a part of the world again being snuffed out. With each attempt the punishment growing more and more severe. His first try is just brushed aside with a cane: “Brandishing the cane and the newspaper to drive Gregor back.” (13). The father’s weak attempt at controlling Gregor. The next time is much worse: The apple literally forced its way into Gregor’s back” (37).
