The Brooklyn Dialect

Improved Essays
I have grown up in New York City or “Noo York City” my whole life. So naturally I speak English, or New Yorker English to be exact. To be even more specific, the dialect I mostly associate with is Brooklyn accented English, a definite regional dialect. I would say it’s very similar to Staten Island dialect but there are distinctions. Brooklyn dialect is heavily influenced by Italian Americans since back in the day Italians made up majority of the neighborhoods but is seen more as a street/ghetto slang today. You will typically see someone from Brooklyn speak not only with their mouth, but with their hands. It’s a very aggressive style of communicating but by no means mean any harm. We see words like almond pronounced AH-mond, and not ALL-mind.

The focus of this ethnography is to see the effects gentrification has on southern Yonkers' homeless population and in turn their effect on the community. I will conduct my project in the heart of the southern Yonkers', Getty square, where the homeless mostly reside and where the revitalization has begun. My two methods of research were observing and interviewing which will take place at, and around, the local Sharing Community. My goal for this project is to shine a light of the homeless problem in Yonkers and hear their individual story and how it is shaped by gentrification. Dirty, lazy, eyesore: these are some thoughts that come to one's mind when they think about the homeless.…

The Appalachian English (AE) dialect has changed over time. AE developed in the 1700s when Scottish-Irish immigrants settled in the cheap, mountainous territory that makes up the Appalachian Mountains. Isolated from the outside world for centuries, the Appalachian people spoke a distinct dialect that became known as AE. Unique features characterize the speech in Appalachia; the use of these features is fading as the area becomes less isolated.…

    1. There are many perspectives on the different accents found across the U.S., and the documentary, “American Tongues”, reveals just how many there are. Everything from the taste of home one gets when a familiar dialect pierces the drone of “normal speech” heard day in and day out, or the enticing words of a Southern Belle attracting anyone within earshot, to the struggles one must endure to modify, or cover up, their native tongue and the harsh stereotypes given to people after speaking only a simple phrase. So what are the ups and downs of “talkin’ funny”? Many people, when asked, will tell you that there are things that can make you feel safe.…

In ‘Dialects in Schools and Communities’, Adger, Wolfram, and Christian (2007) refer to dialects as “a variety of language” (p. 1). This means that regional dialects are a variety of language depending on location. Regions geographically further from one another will often have more variation. For example, a Cincinnati dialect would differ more from a Cleveland than Columbus dialect.…

Do the English that is spoken at home while growing up have any effect on how well you performed in school or around your community? I grew up in Los Angeles, CA in a low-income area that was infested with a lot of gang activities, criminal activities, and drug related activities. Growing up in this type of environment I was accustomed to speaking improper English also know as slang. Talking and writing improper English was common for me in an everyday situation for example when communicating with friends even family members I would open up with what's up instead of answering with hello how are you doing. Throughout high school improper English would transition into my schoolwork, instead of writing I am, I would've wrote I is.…

With a close up of various regions of countries, one can see how everyone who speaks a language will not speak it the same way. Created in the 1980s, American Tongues is an informative documentary that illustrates the theme of dialectal variation in the United States. America has been considered a melting pot for multiple diverse people and cultures. In the past, settlers who traveled to and across the United States left their mark on various regions as they brought their accents, such as African languages molding dialects of the South and how French and English is intermingled by Cajuns in Louisiana. However, the documentary demonstrates and highlights how people tend to create stereotypes for people who do not speak the same way they do and how people may even change their accent to be accepted.…

In the book of Matthew 15:13-16, Jesus discusses the notion of being a city on a hill. In Winthrop 's speech he tells his shipmates that they will to be a “city on a hill”. Many major politicians have referenced the “city on a hill” speech such a former presidents John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan. Kennedy’s speech and Reagan’s farewell address use Winthrop’s “City upon a Hill” speech differently. Kennedy uses the speech in a positive way because he is about to enter the office for his presidency and therefore he doesn’t know how the whole “city on a hill” idea works with America, this is just his prediction for when he starts his term.…

When I came to the United States, I was educated and spoke English. It was British English; the pronunciation, spellings of some words and some of the grammar were completely different. When I enrolled in middle school, everybody made fun of me; all the students thought I was not smart because I could not communicate with them in American English. However, it was not just hard to communicate with other men, but it was also hard to communicate with women because I am a man. I believe that there is a difference in how individuals communicate; it all depends on a person’s gender and the language he or she grew up speaking.…
