At first glance the true meaning cannot be seen; this is until you look further beyond what actually meets the eye. When first peering at the painting, you will find your eyes drawn to the linage used in the column. The column has been placed as a replacement to her actual spine, and with the broken and battered appearance it symbolises the injury that she occurred in the horrid incident from when she was just 17 years of age. When taking a careful note at looking at the elements that have been used throughout; you may not be able to recognize the small nails straight away. They have been strategically placed through her skin. These nails act as a symbol of the physical pain that she has withstood since her life-altering accident.
