Journal #1 The Bridge of San Luis Ray by Thorton Wilder February 2, 2024 POV: Brother Juniper It was a great trip up until that moment. I journeyed to Peru to help convert the locals to Christianity. It had been very successful as many had started practicing the faith and I was able to open a few churches. It brought me joy to see that many believed in Christianity and chose to change their ways. For so long, I have been trying to disprove local religions. I started out by showing there is no correlation between the Prayers of Rain and precipitation. I must admit that, at times, my faith was shaken. I tried to convince myself that these scientific experiments were for the townspeople, however, I found great solace in them as well. That day it was rather hot, so I stopped and looked at the beautiful view. However, when I stared at the majestic view from that hilltop, I saw a bridge collapse with five people on it. I could not make sense of what had happened. I kept wondering if it was truly an accident or if it was part of a ‘greater plan’. I believe it happened according to God’s will, but the townspeople will not believe me. They do not believe that evil and pain were put into their lives to better themselves. This theme is displayed by all of the characters in The Bridge of San Luis Ray. Many characters in this book die with unfinished business and unmended relationships. Dona Maria’s goal was to mend her relationship with her daughter, which she was very close to obtaining. Maria sent a letter to her daughter, Clara, bravely explaining her feelings to her but Maria died before Clara could read it and reconcile with her. This is also evidenced by Brother Juniper, who wanted to bring proof to the people in Peru of the existence of God and His Plan for
