To reiterate, women accepted their role in a society that “reduces love to a biological impulse and marriage to a profitable alliance” (Giles, 77). We saw how selfish love represented this in Wuthering Heights and now its presence will be investigated in Northanger Abbey. In Northanger Abbey, we are introduced to an interesting protagonist right from the opening line: “No one who had ever seen Catherine Morland in her infancy, would have supposed her born to be an heroine” (Austen, 5). Catherine Morland, much like Catherine Earnshaw, was isolated from society and never received proper instructions on how to navigate through it. As Catherine traverses through society, she meets and falls in love with Henry Tilney, a seemingly perfect gentleman.…

A Bride Comes to Yellow Sky “My foregrounds are imaginary, my backgrounds real” (Flaubert). Gustave Flaubert’s quote described the idea of naturalism, which one’s family background, social conditions and environment help shape one’s character. In the late nineteenth century, naturalism became the main literary movement that many writers, including Stephen Crane, produced works conveying the idea of environmental determination of human characteristics. Crane’s famous short story, The Bride Comes to Yellow Sky, is still famous over a hundred years after its publication date because of its naturalistic context. How does Bronte present marriage in Wuthering Heights? Throughout ‘Wuthering Heights’, Bronte conveys the destruction caused by socially convenient marriages; it seems that the tragic romance of Heathcliff and Catherine is the root of the novel and conveys the consequences inflicted by marrying for status rather than love. Bronte expresses the idea that marriage should be based upon “devotion” and love. The challenging of these socially constructed boundaries of marriage, adds to the gothic element of the novel.…
