The Breakfast Movie Analysis

In today’s society, we feel the need to label everything and everyone as we see it. From sex status, sexuality, or hotness, we always label people. What satisfaction do we get from always needing to categorize someone? Today, young people do not believe in an idea of virgins anymore. If a girl comes up to a group of people and say she is a virgin, they would not believe her. They would automatically believe she is lying. Over the years, I have seen females become more open to stating that they are not virgins rather than girls who are virgins. Yet, why are women looked down upon and called “slutty” when they have multiple sex partners? Where is the harm? Although, no one’s personal number should matter, the sexual standard between both women …show more content…
Most movies are addressing the issue with double standards and expectations between men and women. Women should not be judged on their right to say yes to sexual activity, and women should not be judged on their right to say no; however, it is one thing women will be analyzed for no matter which way we choose. I was watching Netflix one day and notice a classic movie calling out this double standard, The Breakfast. One specific scene in the movie accurately justify the slut- shaming and Madonna/ Whore complex. The Madonna/ Whore complex is identifying a woman as virgin-like or whore-like. Those are the women who are called “sluts”. In the Breakfast Club, after the students are criticizing Claire on her sex status, Allison accurately voice something so true to society today. She says, “Well if you say you have not had sex, you are a prude. If you say you have, you are a slut. It is a trap. You want to, but you can’t. And when you do, you wish you didn’t, right?” Women face criticism when they are promiscuous, while men have the freedom to be as sexual as they want. It is this type of negative reinforcement that creates the double standard between women and

I believe a double standard is in place, amongst girls and boys sexual behavior. Society openly accepts boys sexual activity, however, society does not openly accept a girl’s sexual activity. When a boy loses his virginity at an acceptable age, boys are praised. On the other hand, if the boy does not lose his virginity at an age that he should, then he is seen as gay, weird, or abnormal. It is believed that it is normal for a boy to engage in sexual activity with different girls, and very rarely do, people tell boys that they need to stop having sex, or that they shouldn’t.…

In order to benefit society, the term “slut” has to be eliminated. By eliminating the double standard existing between men and women, the word holds no power. As a result, crimes such as rape hold accountable the criminal committing the deed and rumors about sexual intercourse are not overblown as they currently are. Only by eliminating the word can spark a new movement where women can openly discuss about their sexual…

Oral folktales and Disney films are known for populating their worlds with anthropomorphic animals. These animal figures are represented as either human characters who are transformed into animals or characters who are consistently animals throughout the folktale or film. Both representations of animals delineate a relationship between animals and humans. The nature of this relationship depends on how the animals are depicted. When a plot illustrates a human's transformation into an animal, Disney films and oral folktales use the animal imagery in similar fashions: as a vehicle for the transmission of social values and to underscore the superiority of the human condition relative to the animal condition.…

The socially constructed importance of virginity and the variety of ways that the concept manifests itself in patriarchal societies is one of many realities that affects the adolescents throughout the world. Virginity, often defined by society rather than individuals, has long been associated with the value of one's person. In class, the topic was presented in a way that concluded with the idea of virginity standards more adversely affects females than males, though when it does affect males it generally only is in relation to the perceived protection of females “purity”. Issues that result from this double standard surrounding virginity include slut shaming, genital mutilation, abuse, and even death. According to Amber, “there are some societies…

This approach is interested in the perception of women by women is related to slut-shaming more so than the sexual practices itself. Armstrong connects a study done by Pascoe (2007) to slut-shaming. Pascoe’s study analyzed the word “fag” in adolescent boys and how it is used. He ultimately found that “fag” is used to make sure adolescent boys and their peers playing into the roles society tells them to. Armstrong takes this discursive approach and applies it to slut-shaming, which she believes regulates girl’s public roles.…

Imitation and Transformation On a regular weekday, I was in class listening to a group of women presenting on some topic I couldn’t recall. After their presentation, the instructor, also a woman, told the presenters to stop “uptalking” in the future because their speech pattern can make them sound high-pitched, unconfident, and unprofessional. The class, including myself, silently accepted the instructor’s advice; however, I thought the instructor was trying to tell presenters that they need to imitate the speech pattern of men if they want to be taken seriously. In short, there is this idea that the only way to gain achieve equality in society is to imitate those in positions of dominance, specifically white cisgender heterosexual bourgeoisie…

Double standards against females occurs everywhere, in schools, work, relationships, and everyday life. females are viewed as sex-symbols, but are seen as a whore or slut if they choose to express themselves in a certain way. Which is not ok, advertising companies use slim and fit females to sale products, the consumer can even sometimes remember the product, but can recall that there was a female in a bikini, this has been going on since the 1980’s. Females are catcalled, exploited, raped, sexually harassed, seen as toys, not taken seriously, and put into a ‘box’ of stereotypes.…

The double standard of sexual behavior, or the notion that men are allotted a more favorable perception of their sexual behavior than that of women has been prevalent in our society for centuries. Moreover, I believe the negative impact of double standards are most prominent within a woman’s secondary schooling and college years between the ages of fourteen and twenty-two. During this time, I believe that boys are often praised for their sexual behavior while girls are looked down upon and are meant to feel ashamed of the same sexual behavior that their male counterparts are not only partaking in but are being applauded by doing so. Furthermore; in the online journal, CASUAL HOOKUPS TO FORMAL DATES: Refining the Boundaries of the Sexual Double Standard, authors Reid, Elliot, and Webber primarily focus on the sexual double standards of college students.…

Purity and virginity exhibit two characteristics expected of women in the eyes of men, and without them, are devalued and undesirable. However, the same expectations are not placed upon men which creates an immense double standard. If women chose to sleep with multiple men she would in turn be treated with less respect and deemed a “whore,” whereas men would actually gain respect for having slept with multiple women and have free reign. The ideal woman is always thought to be virtuous, pure, and whole. This mindset in turn contributes to the objectification of women as a prize rather than a human being.…

In today’s society, a girl who sleeps with multiple guys is a slut; however, men are basically worshipped for having sex with many girls. This is a double standard that has also been going on since the beginning of time. Unfortunately there is no actual reason for this, but it is the notion in today’s world. This stereotype enforces that “women are evaluated negatively and men positively for engaging in similar sexual behaviors” (Zaikman 1). Sexism being harder on girls is easily proved by the double standard of sexual…

Colleges these days are hotbeds of sexual activity. With sixty to eighty percent of undergraduates admitting to having taken part in some kind of hookup, no one can seem to keep it in their pants (Garcia). Hookup culture effects safety and psychological heath, especially in women, and this is a problem. To get to the root of the issue, we must first fully understand what the term “hookup” means. In today’s world, the word “hookup,” also referred to as a “one night stand” or even a “quickie,” is often used as a catch-all phrase.…

    The Sexual Double Standard

Females are not to express sexual freedom because it is seen as "trashy," "slutty," and "nasty" but on the other hand, males who partake in the same negative behavior are praised, considered a "real man", and are encouraged to continue their promiscuity. If a woman has lots of sex, she’s a “dirty whore” but if a man has lots of sex, he’s a “stud” and a “player” (Ashwell, 2016). A feminist perspective challenges the motives behind these existing attitudes and seeks to find answers in the gender gap (O’Neill, 2015). It is only due to the dismissal of the stigma does the double standard get overlooked in every day social settings (Bordini & Sperb, 2012). Are men intimidated by women?…

Slut shaming has been and continues to be a way to oppress women, particularly women who have sexual experiences or used against women who are perceived to be overly sexual. It is a derogatory term that is used to dehumanize women, and devalue them. When looking at slut shaming, we can think of the many stereotypes that women face on a daily basisWhen looking at the prominent written rules that run our society which are known as “ruling texts” (Dillon. 333), we can see that all have been composed and supported by men. These ruling texts include documents such as the Bible, the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution along with many Supreme Court cases which have defined Americans’ legal rights have been written by men (Dillon. 333-334).…

Mass media is a macro level influence in today’s society and one of the ways the sexual double standard and expectations for girl’s sexual behavior is reproduced. Miller discovered that many of these women were trying to make sense of the hypersexualized female in the media and the sexual behavior expectations of society. Despite these contradictory messages, most of the women she interviewed understood that being feminine is about being wanted by men but not wanting sex in return. By demoralizing societal deviances in other girls, they were able to raise their own status and portray the ideal feminine characteristics. Girls who participated in multiple sex partners and promiscuous behaviors were seen as passive recipients of boys and were…

Unfortunately, sex, especially uninformed sex among teens, is seen as the “be all end all” of life itself and is not regarded well in today’s society. As a byproduct of sub-par sex ed, this problem of “slut shaming” or criticizing, degrading or mocking anyone for his or her real or presumed sexual activity has begun because people are not sexually educated. Another byproduct is the construct of virginity and that having sex transforms a person, mainly women. According to Julie Zeilinger, a feminist author and editor at Identities. Mic, "We only speak of virginity when it comes to women.…
