The Breakfast Movie Analysis

In today’s society, we feel the need to label everything and everyone as we see it. From sex status, sexuality, or hotness, we always label people. What satisfaction do we get from always needing to categorize someone? Today, young people do not believe in an idea of virgins anymore. If a girl comes up to a group of people and say she is a virgin, they would not believe her. They would automatically believe she is lying. Over the years, I have seen females become more open to stating that they are not virgins rather than girls who are virgins. Yet, why are women looked down upon and called “slutty” when they have multiple sex partners? Where is the harm? Although, no one’s personal number should matter, the sexual standard between both women …show more content…
Most movies are addressing the issue with double standards and expectations between men and women. Women should not be judged on their right to say yes to sexual activity, and women should not be judged on their right to say no; however, it is one thing women will be analyzed for no matter which way we choose. I was watching Netflix one day and notice a classic movie calling out this double standard, The Breakfast. One specific scene in the movie accurately justify the slut- shaming and Madonna/ Whore complex. The Madonna/ Whore complex is identifying a woman as virgin-like or whore-like. Those are the women who are called “sluts”. In the Breakfast Club, after the students are criticizing Claire on her sex status, Allison accurately voice something so true to society today. She says, “Well if you say you have not had sex, you are a prude. If you say you have, you are a slut. It is a trap. You want to, but you can’t. And when you do, you wish you didn’t, right?” Women face criticism when they are promiscuous, while men have the freedom to be as sexual as they want. It is this type of negative reinforcement that creates the double standard between women and

Pornography is dominated by both female and male fantasies and is meant to facilitate more pleasure than pain. Longino is perpetuating a feeling of shame within the male and female communities by defining what she feels is oppressive towards women. What she feels is harmful is very subjective. It is unfair to ostracize people, or more importantly women, who enjoy pornographic media. These women are not necessarily demeaning themselves, they are just partaking in the uses of pornographic material.…

Many women will dress provocatively to attract attention from men and be upset when attention is given. There is not a fair fight. Some feminists are known to march at ralleys topless to get their point across. If a lady is drugged after a night with a partner she has a right to feel victimized and pursue justice by authorities. "It is intellectually dishonest to think we are living in a rape culture," Ms Southern says in the introduction to a video on a feminism rally against sexual assault.…

For some reason whenever women have sex people assume that she is now a slut because if she did it once there is nothing stopping her from doing it again. Society seems to think that all men are supposed to be sexually experience while every woman is supposed to be abstinent and pure. The social norm in this country about sex makes absolutely no sense and it is literally impossible for anyone to actually live up to it. Virginity is technically not a real thing; it is a word that people made up and use for the sole purpose of shaming women who refuse to…

Virgin and virginity are terms applied to both men and women who have not yet had sex. It also represents an idea of purity, particularly with girls. The concept of having something special or precious that you give away or lose when you have sex is a very damaging social construction. It is used to scare and shame girls, and makes them fear their own desires and sexual beliefs. This idea that penis and vagina sex have some kind of special meaning or power over us seems strange.…

Society views those who choose to have sex as “bad” girls, and their own classmates call them sluts. Thus, these girls become known as being used up and are left out to dry by the abstinence-only education programs. In the United States the value of a women is only based on their sexual behavior and not them as a person explains Valenti. This is the purity myth as described by Valenti, the made up story that women are based on their sexuality and not their true character. During the book, Valenti fights for the character of a women to judged rather than their sexuality and…

This is mostly the fault of our own society and its expectations of women. Jassen states, “Society poses greater restrictions on women 's sexuality and doesn 't encourage women, to the same degree as men, to explore their sexuality”(8). With these social restraints on porn, women are intimidated of the idea of porn and the near-perfect girls casted in them. With…

She has to sneak around because she will become known as a slut, or whore if she does not. This is a big aspect of the sexual double standard. A guy can have sex with multiple girls at the same time and be “the man”, but if a girl were to do the same she would be named a “whore”. That is unfair because both parties would have been participating in the exact same actions. It seems as if a girl wants to show her sexual desire in the same way a boy does she is not acceptable to society.…

Investigating the victims themselves in violations of this Honor Code and then suspending them for perceived violations are perpetuating Smith’s words. While the offenders do get punished as well, the fact the victims receive punishment for something that never should have happened to them reinforces the idea that these women are whores because they are no longer sexually pure, even though it was not their…

Women are deemed whores for having sex and men are labeled legends. Women are taught that they should be proper and innocent, and not give it up to men, so when they do, it feels wrong and immoral. Women are also taught that men only want sex, so it feels as though they are using women for sex, and no one wants to feel used. Society's thoughts on casual sex must change before our own feelings on it do. Minot illustrates the negative connotations around sex by observing that, “the more girls a boy has, the better.…

To be a woman is to be simultaneously hypersexualized and shamed for the sexualization. It is to be called a “prude” if it is rejected while also being called a “whore” if it used as a source of empowerment. There is no middle ground because this sexualization does not stem from women, but from men. Patriarchal power has continually forced upon women what they believe a woman should be, which often is the opposite of man. Femininity is considered to be bipolar of the masculine, so they assume that to be a woman is to lack male desires and characteristics.…
