The character Kidd makes me particularly admire was Lily. The traits she showed throughout the story showed how strong mentally and emotionally she is. Being a child and going through many hardships such as her mother dying and her father verbally abusing her shows the emotional toughness she has. “ I knew that the explosion I'd heard that day had killed her. The sound still sneaked into my head once in a while and surprised me.…

In March of 2017, the Federal Court ruled that blogger Belle Gibson was misleading her audience by pretending to cure her brain cancer using alternative medicine, and that she pay a $410,000 fine for this infraction. O’Brien argues that Gibson should be pressed with criminal charges, instead of the civil punishment she received. O’Brien takes on a slightly bitter tone, but as O’Brien explains her reasons, this shifts to a more logical tone. Margaret Walker made a resolution that she would depict the realistic, anti-Gone with the Wind version of slave culture within her novel Jubilee, no matter how many years and decades of research and writing it took her (Pettis 13). As many critics have mentioned, by focusing on the practical, unheroized lives of slaves as well as on the folk tradition that helped the slave community maintain a level of self-respect through a world that constantly tried to rip every shred of dignity from them, Walker told the forgotten narrative through the official history of the South, that of the slave who was only trying to wake up alive every morning (Cataliotti 187). In Jubilee, Margaret Walker recreates the unique culture of the slave community through the use of folk tradition, such as epigraphs, song, and knowledge of the land, along with the focus…

Loneliness is another unpleasant thing existing in this world that Kidd depicts in her novel, and throughout her work, she shows that this kind of awfulness can also be dealt with using positive actions. In the exposition, she makes it apparent that loneliness plays a huge role in the protagonist’s life. When Kidd depicts Lily’s life in the beginning, she informs her audience that Lily’s mother, Deborah, is dead, she has no friends besides her caretaker, Rosaleen, and she is in “misery [from] living with T.Ray (3),” her cruel father. Based on all of these facts, it is clear that Lily is a forlorn child and is feeling empty inside. In both “Sarah Cole: A Type of Love Story,” by Russell Banks, and “Parallel Universes,” by Etgar Keret, multiple worlds are used in two different ways to cope with a loss being experienced by the main characters of the narratives. “Parallel Universes” has the most common form of multiple worlds as the individual that narrates begins with “There’s a theory that says there are billions of other universes” and goes on to imagine those other universes. However, this concept of other universes are used as a coping method for loss. As it is said “There are some parallel universes where I am having sex with a horse, and ones where I win the lottery,” and so on and so forth, but “The only ones that interest [them] are the ones where she isn’t happily…
