The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is told from the point of view of the early 1940s in the middle of World War II. It is the story of a little boy named Bruno who is very naïve when it comes to the events of the world because he is not properly informed. He is born into a wealthy, important family in Berlin. There he is brought up with his three best friends for life: Karl, Daniel, and Martin, and his sister, Gretel, who is a “hopeless case” (Boyne p.3 and 7). He lives in a big house that is great for exploring because of all its nooks and crannies (Boyne p.99). He has many adventures in this house such as sliding down the banister, and putting on many plays directed by grandmother (Boyne p.9, 88, and 99). The story is an entertaining book which makes it appealing to all ages. The book implies several things that give the reader a sense of mystery, and add amusement to such a thick story. Stories about the holocaust are hard to write due to the task of retelling the story in such a way we can relate and understand. The Boy in the Striped Pajamas preformed this task perfectly. It is easy to sink into this book with all the mystery and emotion involved; therefore, this book should be recommended to all people age middle school and up because of the maturity level it takes to read such tragedies. This book, even though it is marked as a fable, has many great lessons and themes that all people need to enjoy such as love in the midst of hate, and the true affect of the Nazi occupation. The holocaust is a sad time in this world, and very few people who lived through it are still alive; therefore, we need to understand and remember what happened.
