The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas is a book written by John Boyne. the book follows a nine year old boy named Bruno and his family moving from their house in Berlin and move to "Out-with" because of orders from 'the fury'. Bruno doesn't like this new house and goes outside to explore when he discovers a boy the same age him named Shmuel where they form an unlikely friendship through the fence. This essay will discuss the many symbols that explore the topic of the lack of freedom in John Boyne's The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas. 3 major symbols that represent the lack of freedom are the pyjamas, Out-with and the windows.
The first symbol is the pyjamas. the book describes everyone in the camp as " The small boys, the big boys, the fathers, the grandfathers, the uncles. . . were wearing the same clothes as each other: a pair of grey striped pyjamas with a grey striped cap" this quote supports the lack of freedom the Jews have over the fence as they are stripped of their clothes as soon as they get off the …show more content…
Out-with is the place that Bruno and his family move next to, it is later revealed that the name of the camp is actually called Auschwitz Bruno and Gretel first think it's called Out-with with the reasoning of "out with the people who lived here before us " but Gretel later learns its name after she is introduced to the Hitler youth and is forced to follow Nazi ideology. not much is known about Out-with in the book but it is a symbol for lack of freedom because of how innocent Bruno is and how he knows nothing about it. he stats many times that he has no clue why there are people over there and no people on his side and he has no clue why they look so sad. he has no idea what is happening because he is so innocent and this reflect back on
