Final Essay - Bruno’s Negative Characteristics
Bravery is correlated with a lack of awareness as well as an evil, cowardly trait exhibited in them. This is shown when Bruno is an immature person that does not appreciate the living things of Auschwitz. He also has been brainwashed by the nature of Auschwitz, including the surroundings around it. As well, Bruno’s life would have become better if he was not friends with Shmuel, who was a Jewish person. Therefore, Bruno is a person who consists of negative traits, such as fear, because of Bruno having cowardice and a lack of awareness in several factors in Auschwitz, including the immature traits that result in the lack of appreciation for the living things that exist in Auschwitz, the brainwashed

This is shown when Bruno is identified as a careless person with a lack of common sense. In page 79 of the book “The Boy in the Striped Pajamas,” after Bruno fell off a tire, he said, “I don’t know what happened, it didn’t seem dangerous at all,” followed by, “What’s going to happen then? I might bleed to death.” This shows that Bruno does not realize the extent of risk involved with swinging the tire wildly since he is bored of the environment of Auschwitz. However, after Pavel corrected his misinterpretation about the tire, Bruno overreacts with fearfulness and thinks that he might die just from a 5 feet drop from the swing. These drastic contrasts in terms of events indicate the carelessness that Bruno has followed by a lack of common sense, which signifies him as an inexperienced person yet becoming a coward after experiencing ‘severe’ pain with an immobile tire, which is considered a living scenario. Therefore, the carelessness and lack of common sense that Bruno have makes him an immature person with a lack of awareness and bravery. Next, Herr Liszt is the most responsible person out of all the characters in the story for the derailment of Bruno’s maturity. In page 98 of the book, Herr Liszt said to Bruno in a sinister voice, “Then this is what I am here to change, to …show more content…
Bruno’s life is negatively affected because of his dangerous choices that he makes, due to the effects of fear. This is shown on page 172, when Lieutenant Kotler said, “Do you know this boy?” followed by, “That’s not what I asked you. Have you seen him before? Have you talked to him? Why does he say you’re his friend?” This shows that Bruno is being pressured, which causes him to make a dangerous choice with the risk of punishment, such as being beaten or forced to work inside the camp in exchange for supporting a Jewish friend (Shmuel) that he only met months ago because Kotler despises the Germans being supportive and friendly towards Jews, and Bruno is considered a part of the Germans. Also, this shows that it prompts Bruno to commit to a higher degree of evil and cowardice, which is to make a dangerous decision that is forced from a lack of bravery by committing a lie. This, as a result, also shows an even further characterization of a lack of bravery due to his hesitant actions towards a German soldier of a higher class (Kotler), who should be respected and not a person who he should lie to. Therefore, the dangerous choice that he makes due to the effects of fear affects Bruno’s life in a negative way. Next, Bruno does not have any consideration for his own life in Auschwitz. This is shown on

Because the severe conditions in the concentration camps altered many prisoners’ morals, it led to apathy which shows through their insensitivity to death, desperate actions, and loss of faith. Bruno is visually representing himself trying to hold onto the belief that his dad is a good man as that belief slips away. Bruno is still trying to fit in with two groups of people that can be seen as polar opposites during World War II: the Nazis and the Jews. He’s expressing how he wants to belong to both of these groups at once, buts he’s struggling to see the Nazis as virtuous people that he wants to belong with. Since Bruno wants to fit in with a group of more agreeable people, the struggle will end in Bruno not fitting in with his father and other individuals like him. This fits in to the bigger theme of how individuals want to be viewed as similar to the group we belong with, whether to look cool or to look like a better…

In addition, during the process of Bruno’s families move out of Germany to Out-With, Bruno has more thoughts about how evil his sister is, “Bruno was sure that it would have made a lot more sense if they had left Gretel behind in Berlin to look after the house because she was nothing but trouble. In fact he had heard her described on any number of occasions as being Trouble From Day One”(Boyne 15). The purpose of this quote is to use imagery to display how not only Bruno sees his sister as being trouble but others see her in the same way. This means that she does not have the same kind loving traits Katniss and Peter constantly display as older siblings, which is why Bruno dislikes her so much. This dislike towards his sister is the result of her negative behaviour towards him, and is why he acts the way that he does.…
