Bruno’s father, the Commandant, said the camp would be miles away from the house. I find the book is unable to entirely express how Elsa felt by showing her discomfort and distress. The movie shows how Bruno was bored before he met Shmuel. It also emphasizes Elsa’s attempt to entertain Bruno by listening to the radio and drawing. This is most likely to keep him out of the backyard and away from the camp.
This movie is about two boys becoming friends on opposite sides of a fence. They are great friends in the movie but do not seem as close in the book. In the novel Shmuel is mad at Bruno because he does not speak up for him. As a result, Shmuel is beaten by Lieutenant Kotler. In the movie, they play ball and chess together but in the book they just talk. In the movie they seem to have more time to become friends before their adventure. Also, the ending seems more realistic because the search for Bruno happens right after he is goes missing, not a month later.
For the most part, I like the movie more because it gives me a better idea of the situation of World War II and Bruno’s naivety. Although there are differences from the novel, the movie is able to express emotions and feelings convincingly with images and sound. Although the book was very well written, the film was able to show what terrible things happened in the past through Bruno and Shmuel’s
