The two boys became very close friends, meeting up at a fence every day to talk with one another. Bruno would sneak Shmuel food. As they search the camp for Shmuel’s father a group of marching prisoners suddenly surrounds them, marching their way to the gas chamber. In the gas chamber Bruno apologizes to Shmuel about not being able to find his father. The gas chamber door then closes, it becomes dark, and all is chaos. It is basically stating that we can see how the past was by what is written. I do agree with this statement, for years now literature has been able to give us clues from the past.…

Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse is a historical fiction book about a little girl named Billie Joe that lives during the Dirty Thirties or the Dust Bowl as many people call it. A historical fiction book is defined as a made-up story that is set in the past, but takes place during an actual even that has happened. Historical fiction has many benefits for children such as teaching historical events, allows children to develop and makes d understanding about the past and how to learn from things that have taken place in the past, makes history more relatable to children, and helps to explain why some events occurred or people behaved in a certain way. I believe that historical fiction is a very important genre of book because it allows children to learn about history in a fun and laid back way. Fictional literature is often written in compliance with the historical events of the time period in which it was placed. The amalgamation of these two things assists in more accurately depicting various aspects of literature, including setting, conflict, and theme. This conjunction occurs in literary works throughout history, including those of the Red Scare era, as well as during Revolutionary America. Naturally, the same phenomenon also occurs with pieces of literature set in the mid 1800s. Throughout chapter one of the novel, The Adventures of Jim Freeman, historical events greatly influence the way the chapter is written.…

The book, Night, by Elie Wiesel and the movie The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, demonstrates two completely different perspectives towards the Holocaust. Night, a nonfiction memoir, depicted the life and feelings of a young boy who was forced to endure the harshness and depression of a life in a death camp. The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, a heartbreaking movie, based on a fictional novel, shares the inimaginable friendship of a Nazi soldier's son, Bruno, with an imprisoned Jewish boy, Shmuel. Together, they risk their lives to save the young Jew's father. Both stories share the same main topic, the Holocaust during World War II.…

The literary canon is a list of books chosen by scholars that displays the books that have been influential to western culture. The books chosen have been placed under this list because they contain important information that has impacted America. The controversial part of these “canonized” books is that they have been selected by “important” scholars. The system of canonizing a book lacks the diversity that the western hemisphere has, therefore, not all the western cultures are being represented. Representation is key to accuracy within history, in order to capture the essential history of the American literature.…
