Boundaries of teaching role
As described on the previous page, we have a responsibility and a duty to fulfill when it comes to outcomes for learners. As a learning institute, we will of course be focusing on progress and achievement in learning and skills. However, we cannot do this without having a holistic approach both for ourselves and our students.
At all times we must respect diversity and promote inclusion while ensuring that the welfare of learners and colleagues is paramount.
To ensure you do this safely for all involved, you should know the professional boundaries are as outlined in the Institute for Learning's (IfL) Code of Practice (2008) available by clicking here

• A student who requires financial support should be directed to student finance.
• A student may require a translator or interpreter which should be requested formally and should not be arranged through someone you know.
• A student who may require childcare should be directed to the college childcare facility.
• A student needing to arrange student accommodation should contact student services.
There are also designated members of staff within each area for safeguarding, health and safety and fire regulations. Please make yourself aware of these people.
Points of referral for learners (when to refer on)
Teachers have a duty to safeguard students’ welfare. This does not mean becoming over involved but signposting the student to a more relevant professional even when that person is beyond the college staff team. This is to ensure the learner’s needs are met in the best way possible.
