The Boston Tea Party happened on the night of December 16, 1773. It was carried out by the Sons of Liberty, which is a group of patriots. Samuel Adams led it. The Sons of Liberty were made up if males who wanted to defend their rights and protest the British rule. There were also members of the group who were Famous Boston Patriots and that included John Adams, John Hancock, James Otis, Josiah Quincy, Paul Revere, and Dr. Joseph Warren (Boston Tea Party Facts). The Boston Tea Party began at the largest public building in Boston, Old South Meeting House, and over 5,000 showed. There were three major factors as to why the Boston Tea Party happened, “taxation without representation”, the 1767 Townshend Revenue Act, and the 1773 Tea Act. Even though the tea party was caused because of “taxation without representation”, there are many more complicated reasons for why it occurred. The American colonist were being taxed unfairly by Britain so they could have money for the damages that were caused by the French and Indian War. And according to the colonist they were not represented by the Parliament so they believed they should not have the right to tax them. Tea was a popular import item in the colonies in the 18th century. When the Boston Tea Party started, it was approximated that the colonist drank close to 1.2 million pounds of tea each year (Boston Tea Party Facts).
