The Book Thief Power Of Words

In the novel, The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak, words are power and they display the survival of an individual. The novel shows the results, negatively and positively, of words throughout the whole novel. The power of words is manifested negatively to damage others and positively, the power of words is used to comfort and heal others.Important characters such as Liesel, Hitler, and Max illustrate the power of words. Liesel shows the audience that the power of words has the ability to comfort an individual through hardships. Liesel survives hardships that come her way by being comforted by words and comforting others with words. The power of words comforted Liesel when she arrived at the Hubermann’s apartment because she would have nightmares and Hans Hubermann, also known as Papa, would read to her until she fell asleep. The Word Shaker explains to the audience how Hitler had risen to power and that word shakers were people who understood the true power of words. The story displays how a little girl that was a word shaker planted a tree and it grew in size very rapidly because her words kept on growing. Hitler attempted to destroy the tree with an ax, but it failed. The word shaker stayed in the tree and refused to leave, but eventually an important comrade came and the tree finally fell. At the end of story, when the tree fell both individuals left together and heard voices and words from the tree.
