In the movie “The Book Thief” by Markus Zusak, Death states, “I’m always finding humans at their best and worst. I see their ugly and their beauty, and I wonder how the same thing can be both.” The Book Thief is an emotionally thrilling historical fiction tale that takes the reader through the Holocaust and World War II while following Leisel Meminger, a young girl about to embark on a life-changing journey. Throughout the book and the movie, vivid details are given to the viewers which portray the excruciating pain that was experienced during the time, as well as the tear-jerking joy that characters also felt. Undoubtedly, both the magnificent and dreadful sides of people were highlighted in this movie, and all the actions presented in the movie could conjure diverse feelings. Throughout the film, copious Germans treated the Jews terribly. For one thing, a “jovial” gathering took place in the movie where countless written documents were burnt. These books, which were mostly written by Jews, were burnt to dispose of …show more content…
Both the cruelty towards the Jews and the courage of those who helped the Jews can be viewed differently creating opposing viewpoints. While one thinks of the way in which Jews were treated during World War II, two contradictory feelings can be produced: disgust for the malevolent actions of the anti semitics or pride for the ongoing loyalty of the people. The same thing can be said about the behaviors of those who hid Jews. One (such as myself) may believe that it is courageous of the group to gallantly risk their lives for the Jews. On the other hand, many might be offended since hiding the Jews represented disloyalty to their countries. To conclude, various feelings can be formed from the actions of the myriads of people amid World War

Are movies and books really the same? In The Book Thief, the relationships between the characters in the film are represented just as well as in the book. Liesel’s relationships with Rudy, Hans, Max, Death, and books are all great examples of how well a book can be interpreted into a movie. Liesel’s relationship with Rudy is more playful than her relationships with other people because he is her best friend. In the book, they first meet on the street when they were playing soccer and became friends immediately.…

‘The Book Thief’ composed by Markus Zusak has successfully displayed the contextual influences of the Nazi party. It is evident with the dominance of the oppressive government of Hitler, who is control of the lives of everyone, will cause an act of rebellion against him. Zusak has effectively displayed that beauty and brutality co-exist within the protagonist of Liesel and death, revealing the baffling nature of humanity. Markus Zusak effectively conveys the way in which silent rebellion was occurring, even in and amidst the horror of the Holocaust; “She latched onto the closest of books it was blue, and burnt at the edges, but otherwise unhurt.” Through the utilisation of the omniscient narration of Death, as well as the symbolism of the book, Zusak indicates the way in which the Nazi regime coerced conformity of German civilians by destroying any creative or intellectual work, there was always individual who opposed such system, even if they did it silently.…

In its entirety, The Book Thief is an important film that serves to account the overwhelming inhumanity of Nazi Germany through the alternative perspective of a child. Of all the scenes, I found that of the book burning to be among the most important to both the story and Liesel. What marks this particular scene, is that it accounts Liesel's realization of the hate that fuels not only the book burning but the Nazi ideology itself. Hearing the speech and being forced to burn a book, at this moment Liesel feels the overwhelming manipulation and censorship that has allowed the regime to rid of anything or anyone viewed as subversive to Nazism. From the particular mention of communists, Liesel realizes that the book burning goes beyond the censorship…
