The Book Thief Friendship Analysis

Friendship is important because it is a great significance in a person’s life. Throughout The Book Thief, Liesel creates many life long friendships. Some of which, she will continue cherishing, even after the friendship is physically impossible… Liesel’s experience in Himmel Street, would not have been the same, without many of the significant relationships she made. However, Liesel wasn’t the only person with strong friendship, many of the other characters had very strong connections too. Friendship is a very big, and important aspect of a person’s life. It brings joy even in the harshest of situations, it shapes your identity and it is a place where you can be your true self.

Many of the friendships and memories Liesel has, helps to form who she is as a person. Whether it is her obsession with books, her cheeky personality or very caring and loyal side, each one of her friendships accentuates a different part of her personality. Hans' caring and loving nature, really influences Liesel, allowing her, already very caring side, to flourish. However, there is one occasion where Hans’ is showing his caring side, but not in the way he tends to show it in other stages of the book. This happens after Liesel says “I hate the Fuhrer!”. “He clenched his eyes. Then opened them. He slapped Liesel Meminger squarely in the face”. Although it seems extremely harsh, it was very necessary for Hans’ to do that, in order for Liesel to always remember that it isn’t okay to yell, such a comment, out loud, in public, in Nazi Germany. It is clear that many of Hans' best qualities are adopted by Liesel, and are reflected in the way she treats other characters. Hans' minimal knowledge and curiosity for reading and writing ignites Liesel's love of books. However, what allows Liesel's flame to burn and continue burning is Ilsa generosity with her library. “It was one of the most beautiful things Liesel Meminger has ever seen. With wonder, she smiled”.
