In The Book Thief Death symbolises at itself, unescapable death. It says ‘’I’m haunted by humans’’ (Zusak,550) It is haunted by the duality of how humans can be both ugly and beautiful. How humans are capable of extreme horror, like Hitler killing all these Jews. As Well as beautiful when helping others like helping Max hide.The duality of humans is what haunts death.

Whenever she would have nightmares he would get up and read to her to calm her down,or their midnight classes to teach her how to read and write.’’Unofficially, it was called the midnight class, even though it commenced at around two in the morning.’’(Zusak,30) Han’s ugliness is seen in his deep depression which comes from his experience from WWI along with the guilt of the death of his friend - Erik Vandenburg.

His guilt is soul-rendering and is with him constantly.
