As the definition of a protagonist states, learning concepts throughout the novel can prove that the character is a protagonist. In part 4, page 237 of the Book Thief it states, “Liesel read and viewed Max Vandenburg’s gift three times, noticing a different brush line or word with each one.” What this shows is that Liesel appreciated Max’s gift noticing minor details in the gift. Even though throughout the middle of the novel when Max came, Liesel and him became instant friends, this sentence from the book shows that Liesel really appreciates the things Max does to her. This brings up the idea of learning the concept of friendship, because Liesel is taking her relationship with Max and bringing it a step further, because she is now appreciating and noticing the hard work Max did in constructing her gift. This is a true displaying of friendship, because it proves that Liesel cares about Max and loves what he does. In addition to Liesel learning about friendship, she also learns about the concept of
