In the second world war 56 125 262+ people were killed, and approximately 6 000 000 of those deaths were from jewish people. Each one of those people had hopes, dreams, and fears. But even more people had been affected by the war. Those who survived went through changes during the conflict. The Book Thief is a fictional story written by Markus Zusak which is about a little girl (Liesel) living in nazi germany. As a result of living through the cruel and tyrannical leadership of the nazi’s, Liesel had many of her views on the world around her changed throughout the story by having read specific books and stories, befriending a jewish man, and from her relationship with her biological family.

For example; when Liesel read the gravedigger's handbook it helped shape her view of her “papa”. “More than anything, it was the smell of friendship” is how the scent of her father is described. The time spent reading with her father changed her opinion from having him be someone still new to her, to becoming one of her closest friends and her father. Later on Liesel reads “The Standover man” written by Max. This book also changes her view on something, but this time it's her relationship with Max that’s changed. (Zusak 164) says, “she saw an imaginary framed photo seep into the wall- a quiet-smiled secret” This excerpt comes from right after Liesel is given her first story from Max. “The Standover Man” talks about how Liesel had became his friend during a dark time in his life, and showed a family portrait with everyone: Rosa, Hans, Liesel, and Max. The photo being envisioned symbolizes Liesel seeing Max as a member apart of her family after reading his book. To add onto the changes stories have had on Liesel, the book “The Word Shaker” transforms Liesel's opinion of words, that kind words can defeat hateful words. (Zusak 308) Says, “she dreamed of the tree” after Liesel had found and read the story. This demonstrates that Max’s story impacted Liesel, and that she spent time thinking of the meanings in the book. The tree represented their friendship, and in the book Hitler attempted to destroy it. But Liesel used her her kind words, and no matter how hard Hitler tried to destroy their friendship he could not. Funnily enough, this story was written on Mein Kampf, which is Hitler's infamous book. It was another example of good words defeating hateful
