The nobles lived on large estates outside the city walls. They owned most of the city’s land, so the nobles controlled. The nobles served as military officers, royal advisers and as politicians. Baldassare Castiglione described the proper manners of a noble in The Book of the Courtier(1528). Castiglione wrote that a noble must have training to be an able warrior and social talents such as wit, the ability to dance, and "a certain grace that makes all his activities seem effortless and unconscious."

The Marquise of O- by Heinrich von Kleist is a story chock-full of secrets and unsaid ideas, such as the ambiguity of details regarding Giulietta’s possible rape. If you don’t read every word closely, something major will slip your notice. This is exactly what happened to me, specifically when Giulietta is talking to her midwife, who she has called in to hopefully deny her illegitimate pregnancy. The Marquise, who is discussing unwitting conception with the midwife, briefly states that she “conceived knowingly” (Kleist 91). This was surprising after a second reading, as Kleist portrayed her as a rape survivor with no memory of the ordeal.…

Theme One: Unique Criminal Patterns Compared To Other Classes Criminal behaviour amongst the nobility during the Fourteenth-Century was distinct from the lower orders for several reasons. In her article Hanawalt defines the nobility as the “fur-collar” class and defines this group as ranging from the wealthy and ancient gentry to the higher nobility. The main distinction Hanawalt remarks that most of the crimes the nobility committed during the Fourteenth-Century related to their control of wealth and power. Most of their criminal activity related to their occupations and position in society, therefore it was not considered criminal and even tolerated and expected, as long as it did not become excessive. This class tended not to commit felonious…

Chapter 10 is entitled The Flowering of the Middle Ages. The main subject of this chapter is that in contrast to the Eastern Empire, Western Europe governments began to coalesce into more “centralized” administrations with paid officials who acted on behalf of the king enabling the nobility to support new forms of art and literature. The authors’ purpose in this chapter is to argue that the power of the nobility in Western Europe changed from a personal to territorial perspective allowing for the beginning of a more unified government administration to rule over large areas of land.1 One piece of key evidence that the authors’ use to support their case is the formation of the exchequer, or financial bureau, of England, where all fines and…

“The non-nobles of medieval Europe were powerless, impoverished (culturally and/or economically), and miserable” is a common misconception on the Middle Ages. Indeed, since the stories and sources we got are often from the nobility, about it and written for it. Moreover, in general, there is no that much materials and records about peasants, since most of them were iliterate and lived in perishable houses. That does not necessarily mean that the non-nobles were completely absent, but they are usually depicted as inferior to the nobles. Nevertheless, peasants and urban population were actually the core of the mediaval society, they were way more numerous than the nobles and their work was essential for the nobles to survive.…

They had power and a strong influence in political affairs. The monarch and nobles were basically equal in power which is why it was hard for the monarch to rule absolutely the way Louis XIV. In France, the peasants were free from serfdom and although they were still heavily taxed, hey did not have to worry about serfdom as it was nearly abolished. In eastern countries, however, serfdom was still prominent in society. The main reason for that was because the nobles benefitted from taxing them and eastern lords had more political power.…
