When Hill started writing the book his daughter was the same age as the character he was creating. Hill explains his thought process at the time, “I thought of (my daughter), and I asked myself to get into the story and to believe in the character I was creating” (Flurescu). I personally believe there could not have been a more heartfelt connection of his protagonist, there was no other way he really going to see the world from an 11-year-old girl’s point of view than his own daughter’s.
